I started About Saving Heat Co. in 1975, a year after graduating
from University of Denver Business School with a degree in Real Estate
Finance and Construction Management. It was two years after the Mid-East's
Oil Embargo and America was experiencing unheard of gas lines, energy shortages
and escalating energy prices. According to former president Jimmy Carter,
"Energy Conservation is the moral equivalent of war!" This was a war I
was willing to fight. I knew that if every newly built home was solar heated
and totally energy independent, it would still take over 50 years to represent
50% of the United States' housing stock.
The decision to retrofit
Colorado adopted its first residential energy code in November 1979.
Therefore many homes built before 1980 do not have
any insulation at all and may have only single-pane windows. Lack
of insulation, or poorly installed

insulation not only create heat and energy waste, but also cause comfort
problems in summer and winter. This led me to my early decision to focus
on existing homes. I knew that energy conservation wouldn't be effective
without energy efficient homes. Since then, I have worked on mostly older
homes but also newer homes with comfort problems. The new construction
boom is based on work going to the lowest bidder. Many new homes with air
conditioning are still too hot upstairs and too cold downstairs. Global
warming trends and hotter summers are leading to more year-round comfort
problems. And insulation is still being installed improperly. Like their
ancestors from the mid 1960s and 70s, we are still building homes that
can benefit from retrofitting.
Is This You?
Our customer profile is the homeowner who likes their house, their
neighborhood and who isn't moving. Unlike builders or sellers, homeowners
are willing to make a long-term investment in the comfort and performance
of their home. They are motivated to retrofit their homes with energy-conserving
improvements such as improved insulation and more thermally responsive
windows; AND they don't like to waste money on their monthly bills.
About Saving Heat Co. has grown and expanded into one of Denver's largest
conservation contractors. We have worked on over 28,000 homes including
these well-known landmarks in Denver and the surroundings.

Energy costs are low right now in Colorado, but as
Ben Franklin would say for the second Millennium 2000, "A dollar wasted is a dollar
not invested!" |
